Wool is one of the best natural materials for dog sweaters. It provides excellent insulation even when damp, naturally wicks moisture, and breathes well to prevent overheating. Wool also retains its shape and durability over time. Canine Styles offers both 100% wool and hand-knitted wool sweaters — from everyday options like the Deer Valley and Vineyard to premium styles like the hand-knitted Nantucket and the chunky Lambswool, handcrafted in Oregon.

Lambswool comes from a lamb’s first shearing, making it exceptionally soft and fine — our Chunky Lambswool sweater is handcrafted in Oregon from 100% lambswool for a noticeably plush feel. Standard wool is durable and highly insulating, with a slightly coarser texture — it’s what most of our wool sweaters are made from. Both provide excellent warmth; the main difference is softness against the skin. If softness is the top priority, consider lambswool or step up to cashmere.

Most dogs wear wool comfortably, but dogs with sensitive skin or known wool allergies may experience itching or irritation. Finer wools like lambswool are less likely to irritate than coarser varieties. If your dog has reacted to wool clothing or blankets before, cashmere, fleece, or acrylic are safer choices. If you're unsure, our cashmere sweaters are typically the gentlest option on skin.

Our Hand Knitted Nantucket wool sweaters offer the widest size range, available from 8” up to 30” — fitting dogs from under 4 lbs to 100 plus lbs. Most other wool sweaters in the collection are available in sizes 8” to 18”, suitable for small to medium dogs up to approximately 28 lbs. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, then lay flat on a towel to dry. Avoid wringing, twisting, or hanging wool sweaters, as this can stretch the fabric and distort the shape. Do not use hot water or machine dry — heat causes wool to shrink. Some wool-blend styles, like the Whistler Fair Isle, are machine-washable; check the product page for specific care instructions.

Wool can shrink if exposed to hot water, high heat, or agitation in a washing machine. To prevent shrinking, always hand-wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. Avoid the dryer entirely. With proper cold-water hand washing, our wool sweaters maintain their original size and shape. If a sweater does shrink slightly, gently reshaping it while damp and laying it flat can help restore the fit.
