Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between your waxed cotton raincoats, slickers, and neoprene raincoats?

Canine Styles offers three raincoat types, each suited to different conditions:

  • Waxed cotton raincoats: Water-resistant waxed cotton exterior with a cotton lining — a natural-fabric option with no synthetics. Best for light to moderate rain.
  • Slicker raincoats: Lightweight vinyl/PVC shell with a cotton-blend lining, designed to fold up and carry for unexpected showers.
  • Neoprene raincoats: Fully waterproof neoprene with a polar fleece lining for warmth and complete chest coverage. Best for heavy rain and cooler temperatures.

All three fasten with Velcro and are available in sizes 8"–28".

How do I measure my dog for a raincoat?

Measure your dog's back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail — this is the primary measurement for all Canine Styles raincoats. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and measure while your dog is standing. Check the size chart on the product page for the best match, and if the measurement falls between two sizes, size up for a more comfortable fit.

Does my dog really need a raincoat?

Most dogs benefit from a raincoat, especially short-coated breeds, small dogs, seniors, and dogs that dislike getting wet. A raincoat keeps your dog's fur dry, reduces post-walk cleanup, and helps your dog stay comfortable, so walks aren't cut short by bad weather. Even dogs with thicker coats can benefit — wet fur takes a long time to dry and can leave dogs chilled in cooler temperatures.

How waterproof are your raincoats?

It depends on the style. Our waxed cotton raincoats are water-resistant, which means they help repel light to moderate rain but are not intended for heavy downpours. Our slicker raincoats and neoprene raincoats are waterproof, with shells designed to keep your dog dry in wet conditions. For heavy downpours, the neoprene raincoat offers the most protection thanks to its waterproof shell, fuller chest coverage, and polar fleece lining for added warmth. Slickers are also waterproof, but they are lighter and more packable, making them ideal for sudden showers and milder wet weather.

Do your raincoats have a harness hole?

It varies by type and size. Neoprene raincoats include a built-in harness hole on all sizes. Waxed cotton and slicker raincoats include a built-in harness hole on sizes 8"–16"; for sizes 18"–28", a harness hole can be added as a custom option. Custom alterations are final sale and require 3–4 extra days. If you're unsure about sizing or placement, call (212) 472-9440 before ordering.

How do I clean my dog's raincoat?

Care depends on the raincoat type:

  • Waxed cotton raincoats: Hand wash only, no dryer. Avoid detergent on the waxed exterior to preserve the water-resistant finish.
  • Slicker raincoats: Hand wash, hang to dry.
  • Neoprene raincoats: Machine washable — gentle cycle, cold water, no dryer.

All three types should be fully dry before storing to prevent odor or mildew.
