Holiday Travel Tips

Traveling is stressful so today Canine Styles is here to help with 5 simple tips that will help make traveling with your favorite furry friend a lot easier.

Tip #1 - Call the airline

Each airline has different specifications when traveling with your pet. Always stay within your specific airline regulations to ensure you have a hassle-free check-in.

Ask questions like:

Q1. What paperwork is required?
Q2. What are the costs? If flying in the cabin ask if your dog needs a ticket/reservation?
Q3. Get height and weight limit allowances for dogs to travel inside the cabin.
Q4. For dogs in crates, ask whether the area is pressurized and climate controlled throughout the flight.
Q5. In case of an emergency, what are the airline's stated procedures regarding pets.

Tip #2 - Visit your vet.

Be sure to have your dog's health checked and any paperwork prepared for any travel.

You know your dog better than anyone, this is the time to determine if any sedation is needed but only in consultation with your veterinarian.

Tip #3 - Boarding
Ask about check in and pick up procedures prior to arriving at the airport. Be sure to arrive early so your pet can have an extended walk before boarding the aircraft.

Tip # 4 - Feeding your pet.

Depending on the length of your flight we suggest no food or water two hours prior to the flight. For small dogs in the cabin, a wee wee pad on an extended flight may be helpful.

Tip 5 - Make copies of paperwork.

We suggest that you have 3 copies of your vaccination records, 3 photos of your pet, and 3 copies of tags or identity paperwork. Keep one for you, place another in a waterproof bag secured to the carrier/crate your dog is flying in and have another set ready for airline personnel.
