How to Measure Your Dog for a Sweater: Complete Fit Guide
To find the correct Canine Styles sweater size, measure your dog’s back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This is the primary measurement used for our sweaters. Then check the chest and neck measurements to ensure a comfortable pullover fit.
Never choose a dog sweater by breed or weight alone. Dogs of the same breed or weight can have very different proportions.

For the most accurate measurements:
- Have your dog stand naturally on all four feet.
- Measure over the fur, without clothing underneath.

Measure along the spine from the base of the neck, where the collar naturally rests, to the base of the tail.
- Keep the measuring tape centered.
- Do not begin at the top of the head.
- Do not measure onto the tail.

2. Chest Girth
Measure around the widest part of the chest, directly behind the front legs.
- Keep the tape level around the body.
- Do not pull it tightly against the fur.
- Pay particular attention to dogs with broad or deep chests.
A sweater should follow the body comfortably without stretching tightly across the chest.
3. Neck Circumference
Measure around the base of the neck where the collar naturally sits.
- The neckline should lie smoothly without pressing against the throat.
- You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably beneath it.
- Your dog should be able to lower and turn their head freely.
For pullover sweaters, the opening must also pass comfortably over your dog’s head.
